Making great fragrances probably takes a fair amount of trials. When do you know you have a winner? How is that decision made?

Creating a fragrance is a complex process that involves various factors. As a master perfumer with over four decades of experience, I have developed a keen sense for recognizing when a scent is well-balanced and aligns with our distinguished aesthetic.

The client’s input is crucial during this creative journey. Although I may be confident in my work, it is vital to understand their vision and the emotions they want to evoke through the fragrance. This can be challenging when they are unsure about their desires or lack technical understanding of fragrance creation.

The duration of this collaborative process depends on the client’s clarity and expertise. If a customer has a clear vision and deep knowledge of their desired accord, we can create a finished fragrance within a few trials. Also, working with a new client who is still discovering their preferences may require several months or even a year.

I enjoy working with AMAFFI Perfume House because Madame Amaffi always comes to me with an initial vision or inspiration. She gives me the full resources to explore my creativity to its fullest extent to bring that vision to life.

Ultimately, the essence of a fragrance is achieved when my skills and artistic instincts combine seamlessly with her vision, resulting in a final product that exceeds expectations and delights the senses.

What do you find most challenging about creating the 'perfect fragrance'?

Sometimes, miscommunication or differences in understanding the desired concept can lead to surprises in the client’s reaction. Bridging this gap and finding the right way to communicate effectively with them is crucial for focusing on their exact vision and preferences.

The fragrance containers Amaffi uses are unique; "meant to last forever". Is the container built to match the fragrance in some way, or is it the other way round?

At AMAFFI, we approach the creation of our fragrance vessels with the same meticulous attention to detail and commitment to artistry as we do our fragrances themselves. Our art deco-inspired vessels are designed to be lasting treasures, reflecting the elegance and sophistication of our brand.

The design process is a harmonious collaboration between fragrance and container. We draw inspiration from the unique characteristics of each scent, weaving those elements into the aesthetics of the container. For instance, the use of rich, warm colors might evoke the warm, musky undertones of a particular fragrance.
