Formula E returned to Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the first time since 2020 with a thrilling race won by Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein. The German driver was followed across the finish line by Porsche teammate André Lotterer as the team pulled off a fantastic one-two finish in the third ePrix of the Formula E campaign.

Unlike the season-opening ePrix, Formula E descended on Mexico City for just one race. After a hot and cold performance in Saudi Arabia for the opening weekend of race action, Porsche's two drivers have the top of the Formula E standings in sight with a doubleheader up next in Rome.

Wehrlein started in pole position for the Mexico City ePrix after a fantastic qualifying session. Yet, Porsche chose not to attack from the start and instead decided to conserve energy. The tactical decision initially made the prospects of winning the race difficult for Wehrlein.

Formula E standings leader, Edoardo Mortara, overtook Wehrlein early as the Porsche driver dropped back in the field. But it wasn't long until Porsche's tactics began to pay off. The team's engineers gave Wehrlein permission to move up the field as Mortara's energy levels decreased. On Lap 28, with Mortara 2% down in useable energy, Wehrlein overtook the ROKiT Venturi Racing driver.

Wehrlein kept the lead thanks to Lotterer holding off any oncoming challengers for the win. Following the race, Porsche revealed their tactics were to have their drivers work in tandem for the victory. Wehrlein and Lotterer are now on 30 points respectively and 13 points off Mortara's first place. Formula E's doubleheader in Rome could see rival teams copy Porshe's tactics.

Although the Porsche 99X Electric is strong and powerful, the team has struggled to realize its full potential. Mexico City allowed them to finally capitalize on what could be a superior car. Now, Porsche must be consistent going forward. Mexico City could be the beginning of Porsche dominance in races to come.

Elsewhere, any hopes Nyck de Vries had of duplicating his opening fantastic opening weekend were soon dashed in Mexico City. He had a difficult day ending the race in sixth place, putting him in second place in the Formula E standings, five points off Mortara.

Although sixth may not seem like a stellar finish for the reigning Formula E champion, De Vries put in a fine effort after clashing with Lucas di Grassi. De Vries also endured several battles with fellow drivers in a long day's work for a disappointing finishing position.

Championship leader, Mortara, had a more successful day. The Venturi driver ended in fifth, to add to his fifth and first-place finishes in Saudi Arabia. Despite that lead, the Swiss driver will be slightly disappointed with his performance after leading the race early on and may want his team to take a few tactical ideas from Porsche for Race 4.

Formula E now takes off more than a month before returning with the Rome ePrix doubleheader. The races will take place at the Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR on April 9 and 10. It will be a busy month for the electric series with three races, with the Monaco ePrix running on April 30 as the season truly kicks into high gear.
